Eco Purify Water

Your questions, answered.

These are the thirty questions we hear most before someone books, sorted by topic and answered plainly. When a topic needs more room, the answer points you to the page that covers it.

About Melbourne's water

What comes through the mains, and what filtering it actually changes.

Do I need a filter to make Melbourne tap water safe?

No. Our mains water already meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, so it is safe to drink as it comes. What Eco Purify Water deals with is taste, smell and sediment, and what ends up in your fixtures and appliances. Safety is not the problem we solve.

Where does the chlorine smell come from, and why is the shower the worst?

Chlorine is how Melbourne Water disinfects the supply, and a small amount is deliberately left in the pipes. Hot water and fine spray let it escape fast, so the shower is usually where you notice it most. With two carbon stages on the mains inlet, that smell is gone from every tap and shower in the house.

Is Melbourne water hard?

No, it is soft. Our catchment water ranks among the softest of all the Australian capitals, so kettles here rarely build up scale the way they do in Adelaide or parts of regional Victoria. Filters and softeners do different jobs, and in Melbourne a softener is rarely worth the money.

Will the filter take out fluoride or soften the water?

Neither. Carbon leaves fluoride in, and our water is soft enough that softening is seldom needed. Want fluoride removed at the kitchen tap? Talk to us about adding reverse osmosis.

What makes tap water run brown or cloudy now and then?

Brown or yellow usually means sediment has been stirred up by mains work, a burst main or a hydrant test. Run the tap for a few minutes and it clears. Cloudy white is normally just tiny air bubbles, and it clears from the bottom of the glass upwards. Our 5 micron sediment stage stops that grit reaching your taps and appliances. If the colour hangs around for more than an hour, ring your water retailer first.

Will a whole-home filter deal with bacteria, lead or PFAS?

That is not what it is built for. It is not a disinfection or heavy-metal system. Mains water reaches you already disinfected, so the carbon stages focus on chlorine, taste, odour and organic compounds. Carbon block does reduce some lead and some PFAS, but we do not sell it on those claims. If you are on tank water that may carry bacteria, you need a UV stage, and we quote that separately.

How the system works

What sits inside the cabinet, and the job each part does.

What do the three stages each take out?

First, a 5 micron pleated sediment cartridge catches sand, silt and rust. Second, granular activated carbon handles chlorine, taste and odour. Third, a dense carbon block polishes whatever is left. Each stage is covered in more depth on how it works.

Will my water pressure drop?

Not so you would notice. The 20 inch housings on 25 mm connections are sized for a whole household's flow, so you still get strong pressure with several taps running together.

Why use 20 inch housings and not the smaller 10 inch size?

It comes down to surface area and contact time. A 20 inch cartridge carries about twice the media of a 10 inch one. That means more water through with less pressure drop, and a longer life before it is used up. A 10 inch system is fine on a single tap. Across a whole house it restricts flow and needs replacing twice as often. Read more on pressure and flow.

Does the system carry certification?

Yes. The housings are WaterMark certified to AS/NZS 3497, which Australia requires for anything plumbed into a drinking water supply. A licensed plumber does the install and issues a compliance certificate. The full detail is in the specifications.

Why is there a bypass valve?

So you are never without water. It sends water around the filter while cartridges are being changed, or if a housing ever needs attention. You can also use it to run the garden on unfiltered water if you like, which stretches cartridge life.

Is the hot water filtered as well?

Yes. We fit the system on the mains ahead of the first branch, so your hot water service, showers, laundry and dishwasher all get filtered water. That is the key difference between whole-home and under-sink filters.

Getting it installed

Who comes out, what happens on the day, and what you have when they leave.

What happens on installation day?

A licensed plumber connects the system to your main supply, normally close to the water meter. The job takes two to three hours, with the water off for around one of them. Before we leave, you get a plumbing compliance certificate.

Where will the cabinet be mounted?

On the main supply just after the water meter, usually on a nearby outside wall. The cabinet is built for the weather. Got an unusual meter setup? Send us photos and we will tell you what can be done.

What is a standard installation?

Three things: you can get to the meter area easily, the mains connection is a standard 20 or 25 mm, and the cabinet sits within two metres of the meter. Most Melbourne homes tick all three. If yours needs a longer pipe run or new fittings at the meter, you hear about it before the booking is confirmed, and you can cancel for a full refund.

Can you install outside Melbourne?

Our installed packages cover Melbourne metro and surrounds. Further afield? Tell us your suburb and we will let you know if we can get to you.

What about apartments and townhouses?

Apartments are usually a no. The meter and riser are shared, and the body corporate owns them. Townhouses and units with their own meter and an outside wall we can reach are often fine. Send a photo of the meter and we will give you a straight answer quickly.

Can it be used on tank water?

Yes, for sediment, taste and odour. If your rainwater may carry bacteria, you should add a UV stage too. Get in touch and we will quote the right setup for you.

Cartridges and your Care Plan

How to keep the water just as good from year two onwards.

When should the cartridges be replaced?

All three cartridges are replaced together once a year. If the pressure gauge drops 70 to 100 kilopascals before then, usually after mains works, swap the sediment cartridge early. On the Care Plan, we remind you when the yearly set is due.

What if I never change the old cartridges?

Nothing unsafe happens. The mains water was safe before it ever reached the filter. The carbon just fills up, so the chlorine taste and smell return, and a clogged sediment cartridge starts eating into your pressure. Swap all three together once a year and your water stays as good as it was the day we fitted it.

How much is the Care Plan, and what do I get?

There are two plans, each billed once a year starting in year two. Fitted is $299. You get a full three-cartridge set before it is due, a reminder two weeks ahead, our plumber fitting it on a scheduled day in your part of Melbourne metro, priority support and an extended warranty. Delivered is $179. You get the same set and reminder, sent anywhere in Australia, and you fit it yourself. See the Care Plan.

Could I just change the cartridges myself?

Of course. Allow about twenty minutes with the housing wrench, and follow our step-by-step guide. For $179 a year, the delivered Care Plan posts you the set each year, so ordering is one less thing to remember.

Am I locked in to the Care Plan?

No. There is no lock-in and no fee to cancel. Cancel anytime using the link in any receipt email, or give us a call. Your plan continues to the end of the year you have paid for, then stops without renewing.

What happens when I move?

The system belongs with the house. We are happy to quote one for your new place. You can cancel your Care Plan anytime, or hand it over to the new owner.

Cost, paying and warranty

The price, your payment options, and what we cover.

What does it cost?

For a standard installation in Melbourne metro, it is $2,499 installed, including GST. You pay nothing more in year one, because your first twelve months of cartridges are part of the price. Our cost page breaks down what you get and how it stacks up.

What is included in the installed price?

The system and cabinet, three cartridges already fitted, a bypass valve and pressure gauge, installation by a licensed plumber, the compliance certificate, your first twelve months of cartridges, a care guide and a clean-up afterwards. No call-out fees. The full list is on the installed system page.

What are my payment options?

Pay online through Stripe by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or ask for a quote and pay by invoice. The Care Plan is charged once a year, and you can cancel it anytime.

Do I pay up front or once the job is done?

Your choice. Book through the shop and you pay up front, with a full refund if you cancel any time before the installation date. Prefer an invoice? Ask for a quote, then pay once the plumber is finished and the compliance certificate is in your hands.

What is covered by warranty?

The housings come with a 10 year warranty. We guarantee our workmanship too: if anything is not right with the install, we come back and fix it. While you are on the Care Plan, you also get an extended warranty.

If I only care about drinking water, is whole-home filtration worth it?

Probably not, and we will tell you so. For better water at the kitchen tap alone, an under-sink unit costs a fraction of the price. Whole-home filtration makes sense when you want chlorine gone from every shower and sediment kept out of every appliance.
